COP27 failed to implement anything, it looked like an oil megashow

COP27 was a global conference convened by the United Nations to take action to achieve collective climate goals. The conference took place from November 6 to 18, 2022 in Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt.

Still unable to get out of astonishment, COP27, which proclaimed itself the COP of implementation, failed to ratify the Glasgow agenda (COP26) or the Paris agreements on the energy transition. Against all odds, it was one of the most successful meetings of lobbyists from the business sector associated with fossil fuels. It looked more like an oil megashow where more than 600 companies offered their technical services for the exploration, exploitation and sale of fossil fuels.

It was also an opportunity for the presidents of the main industrialized nations to hold bilateral meetings to discuss other issues. Of course, there were many photos, flashes and local tourism rebounded.

The Egyptian Presidency, and the representations of the United States, the European Union, China, the Gulf countries and Japan, were key to ensuring that nothing was agreed upon.

As a consolation prize, a transitional committee was created to define a fund that will make it possible to meet the demands of the most vulnerable countries that are already being devastated by the acceleration of the climate crisis, and that polluting countries can contribute if they wish. Contributions would be at your discretion. All the rich nations, on that issue, did not even bother to comment.

They would call it the Loss and Damage Finance Fund and it would mark the start of a "new path for climate justice." That was the only outdated proposal that they managed to write, but without subscribing. That is to say, it was a fundamental intention, but without funds.

As a final discursive statement, reference was made to the objective of limiting global temperatures to 1.5ºC and continuing to promote renewable energy and the search for a just energy transition. The issue of phasing out fossil fuels over the next decade was forgotten. Saudi Arabia was one of the main countries that blocked and managed to eliminate this issue in the energy section of the agreement.

Renewable energies at COP27 lost that round to fossil energies, but not the fight. Better times will come.
