Construction begins on a 100 MWh energy storage project in Belgium
Energy Storage Solutions (E22), a Gransolar Group company specializing in energy storage, is launching one of the most important energy storage projects in Europe, a 100 MWh capacity system that will help regulate the electricity grid in Balen (Belgium). After developing battery projects in countries such as Australia, the United States or Spain, E22 has focused on the enormous possibilities offered by the European market, which is beginning to appreciate the possibilities of storage as a tool in the face of the energy crisis.
The Spanish company is responsible for the EPC of the 15MW/60MWh and 10MW/40MWh LFP lithium-ion battery systems (BESS) that are owned and developed by the renewable energy and investment and development platform Nala Renewables, a joint venture formed by Trafigura, parent company of Nyrstar, and IFM Investors. The battery systems (BESS) will be located and connected to the 15 kV network located at Nyrstar's Balen smelter.
The project, whose main function will be to participate in the electricity grid regulation markets, is currently in the installation phase and is expected to start up by the end of the year. When connected, Balen will be one of the largest energy storage projects in Europe.
The countries of the European Union are in the process of promoting renewable energies as energies of the future and are aware that this transition needs to be completed with one more step: energy storage.
This project comes at an essential moment for the future of energy in Europe, in the midst of a debate about energy dependence and the importance of investing in storage systems. A time when large projects began to proliferate, hybridized above all with renewables.
