Latin America: half a million children among the trash

Otilia from 4 years old, accompanied to all her siblings and her mother to dig through the trash, they went from early morning until nightfall removed all visibility.
They lived in a makeshift tent made of cardboard, wood and zinc tables, a few meters from the fence already fall of one of the sides of the main garbage dump. To feed during the day, they “fished” the bags of leftover food that came from the fast food outlets in the town. Dozens of children were the same as dogs and vultures that live there. In this environment Otilia left her childhood, where also dies at the age of 13 years of an infection that advanced with the passage of weeks and was never taken care. From the city, she only knew the dumpster.
In Latin America just like Otilia about 500 thousand children leave their childhood and adolescence in landfills. The Subcontinent with its 11 thousand municipalities home to some 12,000 public landfills, which have become lawless areas controlled by the groups that sell these resources. In landfills child exploitation is more than evident. Local governments, do not ignore this reality but do little or nothing to stop it. For them it is a problem of many, but not the priority. Encourage the child labor is one of the most vile, cruel and cowardly those who profess the human subjugation. Manipulating supposed feelings of affection, protection, paternalism or maternalism with the hidden purpose of profit is unacceptable. For these modern slavery, human life becomes simply a use value.
There are many ethical questions that territorially require urgent answers : Can Latin America grow as a subcontinent ignoring the fact that in its 11 thousand municipalities is practiced child slavery?. Where are those subcontinental laws that decidedly curb those who deliberately stealing childhood and adolescence to half a million children?. If these future castrating act in the present with impunity against those who should be part of the next generation of leaders, who can be expected to account for the life of non-human?
Are there many social policies to protect the children?. What a caring society we profess as there may be children with future vs. children without the right to life?. Can we ignore that we have thousands of children digging in the trash on the street or into the sewers, working in mines or dedicated to beg?. It is time that the elephants of the subcontinental politics, stop acting like an ostrich and pull out the head from the small hole where they have and look at their sides.

Murderers in series of the nature

Plastic bags. The trash bag finally arrived at the dump or sanitary landfill and the children who work there come running to catch it and play around with it. kicking it like a soccer ball, until they finally break the bag and then as if it were a pinata of a children’s party pounce on it and scrutinize looking for some hidden treasure. Rotate the bag, the wind drags it and already in pieces is caught by the branch of one of the few remaining trees around the landfill. The wind force is cracking until it is transformed into small strips detaching and these end up in adjacent land. The lizard starving by the lack of vegetation in the area, see the plastic strip off a glow when sunlight reflect and with caution approaches in microseconds and swallows it. After a few minutes it feels the painful seizures stomach that produces the plastic inside its body and dying starts to shiver involuntarily.
In the distance the Cari Cari hawk discovers it and of a blow catch it and as a great gourmet dish taste the lizard on the top of a nearby tree. An hour later, the hawk, shaken by agonizing stomach collapses, the same plastic strip that ate the lizard caused it damage. Crashed into the earth, round the black vulture until it begins its work as cleaner, with such bad luck for it to return to its digestive tract the plastic strip that hours later also kills it. The vulture is broken by the red ants of the area (large carnivorous ants) and when spraying this noble bird, free the plastic strip, which again pushed by the wind back to the landfill or any river, lake or sea, to continue its crimes for 100 years more.
Pesticides and Herbicides. A few kilometers from the landfill, are spraying a pesticide in grains to control pests alleged that consume the foliage that is intended for grazing cows. A frog attracted to the beads or venom crystals catches a couple of them and swallowed. In a few seconds goes into a coma poisoning and prior to die the savannah snake with the spine that is dotted with black, green and brown and yellow belly, in one bite catches it and gives itself a feast. Still, in minutes this dying begins to shake uncontrollably. Two wading birds that see in the distance are advanced over the snake and scramble to catch the prize. The adult bird is imposed and leads. Within hours the poison does its thing again. The rigid body of the heron, begins feeding the lucky vulture and so once again the cycle of poisoning deaths continues.
Lead pellets.
Very close to the vultures area, a poacher shoots his shot against some pigeons to see how good is his aim, the hundreds of lead pellets that do not meet any of these birds fall anywhere. This action causes a terrible pollution of lead (lead poisoning) for those spaces. The plumbism is the poisoning phenomenon that occurs when birds ingest lead pellets coming from the cartridges used by hunters. The birds ingest them mistaking them for the pebbles to help them digest food. These pellets are retained in the gizzard of the bird, which is the place where it occurs the milling or grinding of the food.
Lead is worn or dissolved in the gastric juices absorbed a certain amount by the body … a few days the first symptoms, digestive problems and neural which cause diarrhea and loss of balance. Hundreds of birds die soon hidden among the vegetation. Then the red ants or vultures as they always do cleanup releasing the bodies to the murderers shot, minutes or hours after restarts again the cycle of serial killing.

Canada faces environmentalists blocking in the market for its tar sands

A coalition of 30 organizations belonging to the self Climate Coalition has asked the European authorities to prevent the entry into the tar sands region, a new raw material to produce fuel. The group, involving social and environmental organizations like Greenpeace, WWF, Intermon Oxfam and Action Natura, denounce the environmental and climate impact of this type of pitch or bitumen, which is extracted into open pit mining.
The tar sands, also known as bituminous sands, oil sands, are a combination of clay, sand, water and bitumen.
From tar sands bitumen is extracted like oil which is converted into a synthetic crude oil or refined directly by specialized refineries for petroleum products. As in all mining and development projects of non-renewable resources, oil sands operations have an impact on the environment.
Much of the mining operations with tar sands involves the removal of trees and vegetation of a site and remove the “overload” – topsoil, sand, clay and gravel – that sits above the sand deposit bituminous. Approximately two tons needed oil sands to produce one barrel of oil (approx. 1/8 of a ton). To produce each unit volume of synthetic crude oil is used between 2 and 4.5 units of volume of water. Despite recycling, almost all that water ends up in ponds contaminated .
“The oil produced from highly polluting sources like tar sands emit more greenhouse gases than conventional oil,” say the group in their letters , recalling that tar sands extraction in Canada “has destroyed areas natural and has had a devastating impact on local and indigenous communities. ” The coalition stresses that the European directive on fuel quality (FQD ) was adopted in 2008 to reduce by 6% in 2020, the intensity of CO2 emissions in road transport sector and contribute to the decarbonization of the sector, the only greenhouse gases which continue to grow.
As a strategy adopted by the major oil companies tar sands of western Canada, such as BP, Shell and Total, formed an “alliance” to “improve” the environmental effects of this industry and his controversial image.
The Alliance for Innovation Canada’s oil sands (COSIA ), aims to improve collaboration among industry players by sharing environmental innovations concerning the extraction of this oil.
The oil sands in Alberta, western Canada, is the third largest black gold reserve , behind Saudi Arabia and Venezuela, with about 170,000 million barrels estimated. U.S. refused to enter the game of the tar sands, and this winter, has dismissed the macro project of the pipeline for the importation of Canadian tar sands. The question is whether Europe is ready also to oppose, “the group note. “If Europe wants to avoid the most serious risks of climate change can not ignore that it is essential to properly treat the carbon footprint of these fuels,” say the environmentalists.

Lenin Cardozo / Hugo E. Méndez U. / ANCA24 Italia
