Photovoltaic systems and energy storage the most aggressive trends in the 2020s.

Analysts from Wood Mackenzie and the Energy Storage Association, evaluating the behavior of the North American market, predict that the total MWh deployed will grow almost 22 times in the next five years.

Energy storage has been the hot topic in solar and e-mobility for the last two years, and it's already a strong trend.

In 2021, energy storage installations in the United States totaled 411 MW and 877 MWh, up from almost nothing eight years earlier, and this is just the beginning.

The falling cost of lithium-ion battery technology is the main trend driving market growth for the energy storage industry this year. Since 2013, prices have fallen by almost 78%; In the fourth quarter of 2021, the market achieved a record growth of 282%.

The downward price trajectory of lithium-ion technology continues to confound many projections that the price will stabilize or even reverse. Instead, experts now expect cost reductions to continue as lithium prices fall and are expected to be 70% by 2023.

Bloomberg New Energy Finance has seen a 24% reduction in price for each doubling of cumulative volume, meaning an average battery pack could be just $94/kWh by 2024 and $62/kWh by 2030.

For Latin America, this is very good news and a great opportunity to advance in the independence of the residential sector and to assist the local, regional and national electrical networks.

Belgium: 100 MWh energy storage

Construction begins on a 100 MWh energy storage project in Belgium

Energy Storage Solutions (E22), a Gransolar Group company specializing in energy storage, is launching one of the most important energy storage projects in Europe, a 100 MWh capacity system that will help regulate the electricity grid in Balen (Belgium). After developing battery projects in countries such as Australia, the United States or Spain, E22 has focused on the enormous possibilities offered by the European market, which is beginning to appreciate the possibilities of storage as a tool in the face of the energy crisis.

The Spanish company is responsible for the EPC of the 15MW/60MWh and 10MW/40MWh LFP lithium-ion battery systems (BESS) that are owned and developed by the renewable energy and investment and development platform Nala Renewables, a joint venture formed by Trafigura, parent company of Nyrstar, and IFM Investors. The battery systems (BESS) will be located and connected to the 15 kV network located at Nyrstar's Balen smelter.

The project, whose main function will be to participate in the electricity grid regulation markets, is currently in the installation phase and is expected to start up by the end of the year. When connected, Balen will be one of the largest energy storage projects in Europe.

The countries of the European Union are in the process of promoting renewable energies as energies of the future and are aware that this transition needs to be completed with one more step: energy storage.

This project comes at an essential moment for the future of energy in Europe, in the midst of a debate about energy dependence and the importance of investing in storage systems. A time when large projects began to proliferate, hybridized above all with renewables.

Spain: Lithium energy storage for Andalusian rural populations

New lithium storage solutions for Andalusian rural populations

ZGR Corporación and the Cuerva regional electricity company signed an agreement to provide energy support to rural areas in Granada, Spain. This agreement entails installing a storage system based on lithium batteries in order to improve the electricity supply in the area. In this sense, new solutions in power electronics are going to be launched, both in the promotion of intelligent networks (smart grids), the use of clean technologies, as well as latest generation electrical equipment, such as rectifiers and intelligent chargers that guarantee a quality electricity supply in the face of regulatory changes and new energy consumption profiles.

The ultimate challenge is to provide existing electrical infrastructures with greater flexibility, avoiding investments in new electrical networks, so that they are capable of guaranteeing an electrical supply in the event of contingencies in the urban network.

Specifically, the Cuerva network operation team has chosen a transformation center (CT) in the town of Jayena for the installation of a battery. Its location, far from the substation, causes the network voltage to suffer variations throughout the day, which makes it a suitable scenario for the storage system to supply this variation, thanks to the injection of power, both active and reactivate and prevent the population from being able to perceive this lack in the network

The use of batteries, apart from complementing the mains voltage variations, has another very important function, which is to work “in island mode”. This term refers to the fact that, in the event that the network suffers a breakdown, this battery is capable of providing energy to the municipality for at least two hours autonomously, giving enough time to repair the network and restore supply. . In short, a storage system is cleaner, cheaper and more effective than the construction of traditional assets, such as new wiring. In addition to enabling the development of services and solutions with greater added value for network users.

“For a Distributor, network storage systems must be a fully integrated component ensuring safe and reliable operation of the distribution network. In this way we avoid the construction of electrical infrastructures with a greater environmental impact”, adds Juan Guerrero, director of Red de Cuerva Services.

Autonomous microgrids with storage: the experience of Quaqtaq, a unit community in northern Quebec, Canada

Energy storage for a world with renewable energy

In an autonomous microgrid, energy storage systems feed off the excess energy produced by wind and solar power, saving it for times of low production.

For decades, hydropower has been the world's leading method of energy storage. At present, lithium-ion batteries are one of the main energy storage solutions. They can run on a grid scale, like hydropower, or power smaller energy demands, like those of businesses, homes, and electric vehicles.

In Quaqtaq, a remote Inuit community in northern Quebec, EVLO Energy Storage Inc., a subsidiary of provincial renewable energy producer Hydro-Québec, installed an energy storage system to help the community integrate solar power.

"When the distribution network goes down due to a planned or unplanned event, the microgrid that we have there will be self-sustaining and will provide continuity of electricity." This is how Adile Ajaja, head of the EVLO technical team, expresses it.

EVLO has developed a better type of lithium-ion battery: lithium iron phosphate batteries. Unlike traditional lithium-ion batteries, the lithium iron phosphate variety is made from non-toxic materials.

Hydro-Québec has been developing the technology of EVLO systems for 40 years. Its smaller systems can power commercial buildings, while its larger, more rugged units can power grids and industrial sites. The lithium iron phosphate battery is one of the most efficient on the market today. Unlike other types of batteries, it has a 100% depth of discharge, which means users can access all of the energy stored in the battery.

In the city of Lac-Mégantic, the company has recently installed an energy storage system to serve a neighborhood microgrid, this being the first microgrid in Quebec. This initiative seeks to increase the resistance of the local power grid.

To do this, they installed a system that stores the energy of 1,700 solar panels and provides service to 40 buildings in the city center and electric vehicle charging stations.

The microgrid and energy storage systems also provide a source of power in case the main grid goes out. “When the distribution network is interrupted by a planned or unplanned event, the microgrid that we have there will be self-sufficient and will provide continuity of electricity,” Ajaja says.
